Week beginning 14.1.24
This week in our spelling lessons we are teaching:
Monday: The u grapheme making the /w/ phoneme e.g. penguin. The ge diagraph making the /zh/ phoneme e.g. collage
Tuesday: The tte trigraph making the /t/ phoneme e.g. baguette. The the trigraph making the /th/ phoneme e.g. breathe.
Wednesday: Review
Thursday: Complete the Code - Rule: The double letters ff, ll, ss, zz protect the short vowel sound in one-syllable words. e.g. hill, mess, buzz.
Friday: Recap Thursday's rule. Teach 'rule breaker' (tricky) words e.g. his, yes, if, has, as

Week beginning 22.1.24
This week in our spelling lessons we are teaching:
Monday: Double the final letter to protect the short vowel sound when you add -er. E.g. Shimmer, letter, dinner
Tuesday: x and v are not doubled in words ending in -er. E.g. boxer, mixer, ever, river
Wednesday: Review
Thursday: Use ck at the end of a word after a short vowel sound. E.g. truck, brick, peck, sock
Friday: Multisyllabic words ending in /i/ and /c/ (ic) are usually spelled with the letter c. E.g. magic, electric, panic
Week beginning 29.1.24
Monday Use tch at the end of a word after a short vowel sound. E.g pitch hutch match scratch
Tuesday We use ch if there is a digraph before the /ch/ sound e.g. beach. We use ch if there is a consonant after the short vowel sound e.g. lunch.
Wednesday Review
Thursday The suffix -s or -es is added to words to make a plural: one duck, two ducks. Or as part of a verb for example: she wishes, she marches, he lifts.
Friday : Add -es if a word ends in the sounds /s/, /x/, /z/, /sh/, /ch/ e.g. mixes fizzes catches dresses
Week beginning 5.2.24
Monday - : Double the final letter to protect the short vowel sound when you add -ing e.g. swimming, running, clapping
Tuesday - We don’t double if there is a long vowel sound e.g. raining, looking and We don’t double if there are two or more consonants after the short vowel sound e.g. helping, printing.
Wednesday - Review
Thursday - Swap the y for an i when you add -ed e.g. try > tried
Friday - When the word ends in the digraphs: ay, oy, ey, just add -ed e.g. play > played
Week beginning 19.2.24
Monday - Drop the e before adding -ing e.g. make > making
Tuesday - Rule breakers! If a word ends in a long /ee/ phoneme, do not drop the e before adding ing e.g. be > being, free > freeing, see > seeing
