Heymann Primary & Nursery School

Inspiring and motivating our children
to be the best they can be

We are so impressed with how well all the children in Year 1 have settled into their school and home learning. They have listened to and followed the new school rules very well and have shown us some fantastic work!

Maths

In maths this week, we will be looking at counting forwards and backwards to and from 10 as well as finding one more and one less. The children should be able to count forwards or backwards by starting at any number within 10 and should also be able to quickly identify one more or less than any given number to 10.

We will also be encouraging the children to practice their number formation to ensure that numbers from 0-9 are formed correctly and not reversed. This week, we are going to start practising counting in 2's up to 24.

Phonics

In phonics, we will be starting at the very beginning of Phase 3. These will be sounds that your children will have already learned in Reception and we will be doing a re-cap of them. This week we will be looking at the y, z, zz, ch and qu sounds. It is important that the children can blend these sounds for reading and segment them when writing to help with spelling.

For more information about how phonics is taught at Heymann please follow this link: https://www.heymann.notts.sch.uk/page/?title=Phonics&pid=100. We will also be focusing on learning how to read and write the tricky words he, she, to, are and the

Writing

Our writing focus this week will be based around the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. This week, the children will be sequencing pictures from the story in order and writing keywords or sentences to match them. They will also be writing a list of things that Goldilocks will find in the cottage. It is important that the children are using their phonics skills to identify the sounds within the words to help with their spelling. We will be encouraging the children to use the cursive Heymann handwriting style as well as ensuring that their writing is the correct way around (left to right). We encourage the children to look at lots of different versions of the same story to see common themes within them, but also to recognise that there are many ways to tell the same story. Here is a link to another version https://learnenglishkids.britishcouncil.org/sites/kids/files/attachment/short-stories-goldilocks-and-the-three-bears-transcript.pdf.

Each week we will have a handwriting focus which you can find in a document on the main Year 1 page. We will be following the Letter Join scheme that you can access at home for practice. You can also find our Year 1 writing targets on the same page.

Reading

We encourage you to read with your children at least 3 times a week to ensure they are applying their phonics skills and developing a life long love of reading. We will read with them at least once a week during guided reading sessions at school. Over the next few weeks, we will be assessing the children's reading levels and sending them home with a coloured book banded book, as well as a reading record for you to document their reading at home. This will be sent home after the curriculum information has been sent out which will be on October 2nd.
