I am sure that people have seen or heard about the Netflix series ‘Adolescence’ and whilst I acknowledge that ‘Adolescence’ has a bit of dramatic license, we cannot just ignore the messages it sends. Social media is affecting young people today and influencing society. This is real. This is our children’s reality. For many this is the culture they are already in.

Stephen Graham, creator and actor in ‘Adolescence’ said,

It’s being mindful of the fact that not only we parent our children, and not only the school educates our children but also there’s influences that we have no idea of that are having a profound effect on our young culture, profound effects, positive and extremely negative, So it’s having a look at that and seeing that we are all accountable’

Ignoring the impact of phones and social media is not an option, as parents, and professionals we need to learn and understand the effect they will have if we do nothing and what happens if we are distracted by life and our children explore these spaces on their own.  We need to educate ourselves as responsible adults.

We need to help our children from a young age build resilience in the context of phones and social media. This workshop is an important step towards developing an understanding of the impact of social media on our children.

We will run two sessions and provide childcare for the after school and evening sessions. We are not sure what the uptake will be on the sessions but strongly recommend that someone from each household attends one of the sessions. The sessions are appropriate to parents and carers of children in all year groups from Nursery to Year 6.

We are initially offering 3 sessions and will run with the two that are the most popular. We are not sure what time of day will appeal to people the most hence the reason for going with the ones with the most responses.

At the end of the session there will be the opportunity for people to suggest next steps and identify what would be helpful for our children and families and the ESHAW team will be happy to support and guide us with this.
