This week in Nursery we have begun exploring the much‑loved story The Little Red Hen, and the children have been wonderfully busy taking part in activities that bring the story to life!

Before we even opened the book, we started by thinking about where food comes from and what plants need to grow. The children investigated different seeds and then planted their own cress. We talked about what plants need—sunlight, water, and care—and the children were so excited to check on their pots each day. They were very proud to see their cress growing taller!

To help us understand how the Little Red Hen made her bread, we also had a go at making some of our own. The children helped to add the ingredients into the bread maker and observed the different textures—soft flour, bubbly yeast, salty grains, and water. There was lots of discussion about what each ingredient does and how they all work together to make bread rise.

When the bread was finally ready… it was a big hit! The whole classroom filled with a delicious smell and, as the children said themselves, “It’s yummy!” Even staff around the school commented on how lovely it smelled.

We finished by tasting the bread together and talking about how it connected to the Little Red Hen’s hard work in the story. The children are already making brilliant links between their own experiences and the events in the book.

We are excited to continue our learning journey with The Little Red Hen over the next few days—there’s lots more fun still to come!
