Welcome to Year 2

Summer 1 2025

The staff that you will be working with are Mrs Handley (2T), Mrs Kavanagh (2L) and Mrs Johnston (2P)

Other adults that work in Year 2 are Mrs Caines, Miss Darnbrough, Miss Patterson, Mrs Dosanjh, Miss Plarkou,
Miss van Kleef, Miss Daly, Mrs Littlejones, Mrs Ali and Mrs Bielecka.
On a Tuesday morning, you will be taught by either Señora Cameron, Miss Comrie or Mrs Davies.

Please can children come to school in PE kits on Tuesdays (tennis).

Year 2 will be starting our swimming lessons from Thursday 24th April 2025 (morning session).

Please ensure that you send your child to school with their swimming kit and towel in a bag that they can carry. Your child can bring goggles if they wish to.  All children will be expected to wear a tummy belt (floatation device) regardless of swimming ability outside of school, unless instructed otherwise by one of the swimming teachers.

Below are a few rules about what to bring and what to wear:

  1. If your child has pierced ears, they are not allowed to wear earrings in the pool. Please do not send them to school wearing earrings, watches or any other jewellery on swimming days.
  2. If your child has long hair, please ensure that it is tied up. We will provide swimming caps for children with long hair that will need covering.
  3. Girls need to wear a one-piece swimming suit. Two-piece swimming suits are not allowed.
  4. Ideally, boys should not wear baggy shorts; they should be fitted.
  5. It would be easier when getting the children changed if girls were not wearing tights on swimming days.

Please ensure that your child is wearing school uniform on swimming days and that they are not wearing their swimming kit underneath their uniform. They should get changed at the pool. Names on items of clothing are very useful as children can mix up or loose items of clothing in the changing rooms.

Practising changing from uniform to swimming kit and back again would be very useful to do during the Easter holidays as this is the first time they will be swimming with school.

Please also make sure that children bring a water bottle and their book bag (with their reading books and reading record) to school every day.

Please view our Curriculum Meeting 2024-2025 tab which has videos that share information about Year 2. This will include information on homework, assessment and daily routines.

This half-term our history topic is “Why were Florence Nightingale, Mary Seacole and Edith Cavell significant people?” Please see our knowledge organiser below.

Our science topic this half term is plants. Please see our knowledge organiser below for more information about the key facts we want your child to learn by the end of the unit.

Please see below our Summer maths KIRFs (Key Instant Recall Facts). Key Instant Recall Facts are what underpins much of the mental maths knowledge that children are required to know throughout their learning journey. KIRFs are crucial for ensuring that a child is able to build confidence and fluency with a wide variety of mathematical topics. By being able to reference Key Instant Recall Facts on a regular basis, they’ll also find the national curriculum to be significantly more accessible.
